Spring has officially sprung, and that means one thing—it’s time for annual spring cleaning to commence! However, this year, it’s time to take spring cleaning from your closet to your plumbing—you have the time! As shelter-in-place orders turn from weeks to months, there is no better time to whip your plumbing systems into shape!
Just as the Marie Kondo method is great for eliminating excess clothing and household clutter, the Parzival Plumbing approach is your best bet when it comes to getting your plumbing sorted. Here is your spring cleaning guide: plumbing edition!
Check Exposed Pipes
Routinely check your exposed piping for signs of leaking or deterioration. If you see dripping, cracking, or buckling, contact a professional plumber ASAP to avoid further damage. Additionally, check your walls, ceilings, and floors for signs of leaks. Water spots, stains, foundation cracks, musty odors, skyrocketing water bills, and visible mold or mildew are all causes for concern. If you notice any of these leak symptoms, reach out to your local plumbing company—you need pipe repair or replacement.
Inspect Your Drains For Signs Of Clogs
If you notice slow drainage, pooling water in your sink, or gurgling water coming up your drains, it’s time for a deep, drain cleaning! If your drains are working properly, simply give your sink a good scrubbing, with a disinfectant solution, to rid your sink of any lingering germs or stains.
Remove Debris From Your Gutters
Clean any fallen leaves and debris from your gutters, downspouts, and outside drains to ensure water can flow freely through this system. Failure to do so can result in extensive property damage, as water will begin to drain and accumulate at the foundation of your home.
Tackle Water Spots
Water spots on your plumbing fixtures result from mineral build-up. This is a common side-effect of hard water; however, it is easily remedied. Simply create a vinegar solution with equal amounts of water and natural, white vinegar. Then, apply the solution with a spray bottle, scrubbing the affected fixture with a sponge or rag until the water spots have lifted. Dry the fixture and your plumbing should be restored!
Freshen Up Your Garbage Disposal
Lingering odors in your kitchen can be attributed to a dirty, garbage disposal. To freshen your system, place lemon slices, ice, and cold water down your disposal, and run if for one minute. After this, allow the water to wash through your garbage disposal for two more minutes. This will clean your disposal and eliminate any unwanted smells.
Review The Temperature On Your Water Heater
It’s good practice to check your water heater’s temperature every once in a while. So, now is as good a time as ever! Make sure your water heater is set to around 120 degrees Fahrenheit, no higher. Temperatures above 120 degrees can lead to burning and scalding as well as impede energy efficiency.
